Fire service research, women
fire fighters, women in the fire service, the fitting-in website where
academia and the fire service can meet to discuss fire service culture
and other matters- a resource for research and consultancy for the fire
and rescue service and firefighters - Organised by Dr Dave Baigent this
site provides a place to share your own research, to look at what others
have written about the fire service and to look at our commercial offerings.

Academics are not the experts,
fire and rescue service managers are the experts.
What fitting-in can do is help managers to use their expertise.
Theory without practice
is a waste - practice without theory may just be dumb.

Snapshot
Audit
Snapshot audits
are a new development for the fire and rescue service. Completed in
under three days, the snapshot audit can be used to provide a very quick
response to a new situation, carryout an impact assessment, test new
ideas or look afresh at a long term difficulty.
Immediate verbal
report back and written report follows within a week.
First developed
with MFRS, our snapshot audits are a proven opportunity to find quick
and rigorous research led answers for under £3,000. Typically
taking three days, these audits are ideal for:
• looking at potential
problems
• testing new ideas
• taking a fresh look at a long term difficulty
• using cutting edge knowledge to help you to make decisions
• seeking answers to areas identified by the audit commission
for improvement
Both Sarah O’Connor
and I undertake the research. Provide a verbal report back on the third
day and a written report within seven days.
Have you seen Ethos?
- the report that provides an answer to the question that most Chief
Fire Officers ask - “Why is it that the values and attitudes held
by new firefighters almost seem predisposed to change from the day that
they commence training?” In asnwer to this question fitting-in
has carried out a long term research project and provided answers that
will be of considerable use to the whole fire and rescue service.
Supported by
the unique experience that fitting-in has in understanding
fire service culture, the research that has given this understanding
and the skills gained from teaching public service students at university.

We are just back
from working with leaders in the Swedish Fire Service and they have
said:
"Fitting-in
with their unique insight into real world fire service culture
and a firm theoretical base in academia provided the MSB (The
Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency) with invaluable expert advice
and assistance in developing a national action plan targeted at
increasing equality and diversity in the Swedish fire service."
This is what Merseyside
Fire and Rescue Service had to say about the Ethos
research, communications and training project:
"The
Service are delighted with the research and reports produced by
"Fitting-in. We believe that your original hypothesis and
work undertaken in Merseyside has resulted in a ground breaking
piece of work that can only serve to inform the wider fire and
rescue communities."
