Fire service research, the fitting-in website where academia and the fire service can meet - a resource for research and consultancy for the fire and rescue service and firefighters - Organised by Dr Dave Baigent this site provides a place to share your own research, to look at what others have written about the fire service and to see our commercial offerings.

Academics are not the experts, fire and rescue service managers are the experts.
What fitting-in can do is to help managers to recognise their expertise and to further understand the issues through that recognition.

Some examples of what our Transformational elite-briefing led workshops would look like

Every workshop is customised according to your needs. These workshops are offered as one-day packages to reduce the amount of time managers are away from their desk. Should you want a less intense two-day delivery, which allows for desk-time, then this is also available. Either way I am offering your service a real opportunity to seek answers to real problems from informed debate.

One-day briefing workshop on leadership and cultural change

Briefing 0900- 0945 - Fire service culture: an overview of this ‘unique’ phenomenon

Briefing 1000-1045 - Mayo: what does Mayo teach us about understanding small groups – what have the consultants missed?

Seminar 1100 - 1200 – How can re-reading Mayo offer new understanding on cultural resistance at watch level?

Briefing 1215 – 1300 – Maslow: a new approach to how firefighters may equate to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?

Seminar 1330 – 1430 - How can recognition of firefighter’s needs help leaders understand resistance?

Briefing 1445 -1530 – Adair: how can re-reading Adair’s concept of action centred leadership offer further understanding of working with the unique characteristics of fire service culture.

Seminar 1545 -1645 – Setting new aims and objectives to facilitate working with fire service culture to achieve change.

Round-up 1700 - until we go home – Putting the theory to practical use – core values and the firefighter – how might leaders actually achieve change?

"The Service are delighted with the research and reports produced by "Fitting-in. We believe that your original hyphothesis and work undertaken in Merseyside has resulted in a ground breaking piece of work that can only serve to inform the wider fire and rescue communities."
This is what Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service had to say about the Ethos research, communications and training project (2007)
